چکیده

Signs, symbols, and signals are essential to the survival and evolution of all complex functional organizations that utilize "information." We discuss basic semiotic relations inherent in signalling systems (communication), scientific models (epistemology), adaptive devices (control), and biological organisms (construction). For each of these different functional realms, basic syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic relations are outlined. An evolutionary semiotics seeks to explain how new semiotic relationships can evolve over time. New signalling channels appear in communications systems by the construction of new ways of sending and detecting signals; new observables appear in scientific models through the physical construction of new measuring devices; new "feature primitives" emerge in devices through adaptive construction of sensors. These physical construction and selection processes have analogues in biological evolution. We discuss the crucial role that symbols play in living organizations (the central role of DNA in the self-production of the organism) and in the evolutionary process (inheritability of plans). "Semiotic evolution" and the "semiotics of evolution" thus point us in a common direction, towards a unified, "evolutionary semiotics."

Synthetic Semiotics: on modelling and simulating the emergence of sign processes

Based on formal-theoretical principles about the sign processes involved, we have built synthetic experiments to investigate the emergence of communication based on symbols and indexes in a distributed system of sign users, following theoretical constraints from C.S.Peirce theory of signs, following a Synthetic Semiotics approach. In this paper, we summarize these computational experiments and ...

The Semiotic Hierarchy: Life, Consciousness, Signs and Language

This article outlines a general theory of meaning, The Semiotic Hierarchy, which distinguishes between four major levels in the organization of meaning: life, consciousness, sign function and language, where each of these, in this order, both rests on the previous level, and makes possible the attainment of the next. This is shown to be one possible instantiation of the Cognitive Semiotics prog...

Gilles Deleuze: Beyond Peirce’s Semiotics

This paper studies the role of the semiotic discussions of Charles Sanders Peirce, the American philosopher and mathematician, in the formation of Deleuze’s first leading book on cinema, Cinema 1: the Movement-Image,in whichthe author surpasses Peirce’s semiotics. We will show how Deleuze creates a new form of signs in his second leading book on cinema, Cinema 2: the Time-Image. Deleuze had tri...

Human-Yeast Hybrids: New Visions to Genetic Disorders and Drug Discovery

Yeast has been a very helpful organism for centuries, especially with respect to fermentation of sugars and production of bread. However, for an even longer time, yeast has been a distant relative of humans having diverged from a common ancestor, about one billion years ago. More than one third of the yeast genes have human counterparts, despite this evolutionary distance. Yeast and human ortho...
